Full Roofing Replacement in Connersville, Indiana
Challenge
This older roof had become too far gone from weathering and aging, it was beginning to affect the health of the rest of the home. The home owner was on top of it though and knew it would be a perfect time to get it replaced, as it had not affected the decking and insulation in the attic just yet. As you can see from the pictures, moss had started to form on the shingles and sidings of the home, the ventilation system was bent out of shape, and some of the flashing needed some work. The gutters on the garage were also a priority to replace. With the guidance of the home owner knowing exactly what they wanted, we began to work.
Solution
We started by stripping the roof down to its decking. The decking was still in really good condition, so there was no need to replace any of it. The roof decking is a major priority in being able to ensure it will last long, so it was good to see it wasn't needing any work done. When stripping the shingles and underlayments, we often utilize a large tarp to be able to ensure we collect every scrap that we tear from the roof. We also use a large dumpster to make this process extremely efficient as well. After scrapping the existing roof, we began to start to build our own.
We started by adhering the IKO Stormshield Ice & Water membrane, which acts as a protector against ice dams and high wind rain. This membrane is applied two feet up from all the edges of the roof, as this is where the roof is most vulnerable to ice and water. When we nail in the membrane We then begin installing the synthetic underlayment chosen for this roof called Tri-Built. This will be placed everywhere else that the membrane was not, making sure to overlap the two meticulously. This is a very good underlayment and has great specifications to make sure this roof decking stays unharmed for years to come. After the underlayments, we then installed IKO Dynasty shingles in a summit grey shade, which looks really good with the blue siding of the home. We then added all the shingles using galvanized nails, which will never rust. When we apply the nails over the membrane, the membrane actually has a glue that will self adhere over the nails, making sure water can't get under the membrane. We then added all the details like roof caps, apron flashing, aluminum flashing, a perma-boot, aluminum rake edges, chimney flashing, and new aluminum garage gutters. The details are all bonded with a very nice roof sealant, as the details are liable to receive rain damage if not bonded properly. The result is a beautiful, strong, new roof!
